"Mechanical vs. hydraulic disc brakes
""The big advantage of disc brakes is that they are maintenance free"". You can read and hear comments like this pretty often. Sorry, but this information is rather misleading. When it comes to the ease of maintenance the decisive point is not whether you have a rim or a disc brake, but which transmission principle is used to actuate the brake. There is no remaining doubt about the fact that cables and their housings are maintenance intensive, above all on a long term. Every serious rider knows: cables suck! Cable activated and also semi hydraulic disc brakes are suffering consequently from these weaknesses. Their only advantage is the lower price. Function wise those disc brakes cannot even compete with an excellent hydraulic rim brake such as the MAGURA HS 33. Because a good long-term function of a product has always been a crucial point for us at MAGURA it has been out of question to even think about a cable actuated disc brake.
